{"id":825,"date":"2013-10-07T08:54:49","date_gmt":"2013-10-07T13:54:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/allenergyconsulting.com\/blog\/?p=825"},"modified":"2013-10-07T11:54:31","modified_gmt":"2013-10-07T16:54:31","slug":"be-wary-of-energy-articles-take-the-time-to-go-an-inch-deep","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/allenergyconsulting.com\/blog\/2013\/10\/07\/be-wary-of-energy-articles-take-the-time-to-go-an-inch-deep\/","title":{"rendered":"Be wary of Energy articles \u2026.take the time to go an inch deep"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">I found this article highlighted and posted on several sites &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.renewableenergyworld.com\/rea\/blog\/post\/2013\/09\/utility-agrees-their-solar-should-supplant-natural-gas\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">http:\/\/www.renewableenergyworld.com\/rea\/blog\/post\/2013\/09\/utility-agrees-their-solar-should-supplant-natural-gas#<\/span><\/a>! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">I was not planning to respond to this article posting as I did not want to legitimize the article, but it looks like there are so many comments on it already and that it has spread to many other sites.\u00a0\u00a0 I think I can, at least, use the article to highlight the fact that many people post them without much substance, and it seems like the public does not mind or care.\u00a0\u00a0 All you have to do is look an inch deep to see this article is not credible.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">This article is clearly bias from the author to the publisher \u2013 probably no different than those found on the American Petroleum Institute on Oil &amp; Gas related documents.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">The article tries to relay an analytical unbiased rigor \u2013 however, that is clearly not the case with just a simple digging of the facts.\u00a0\u00a0 Mr. Farrell reports the cost of a natural gas power plant which at the very least he links to the report.\u00a0\u00a0 However, I guess he knows the average reader will not look into it, and it will make him look like he is on top of it.\u00a0 The report is a 2009 California report.\u00a0\u00a0 IF one just took the time to look at it, the report is not a good document to source from.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The natural gas price used in the report for 2013 is $8.28\/mmbtu and rising to $12.23 by 2020.\u00a0\u00a0 For a frame of reference the current forward curve for natural gas is marked at $4.96\/mmbtu for 2020.\u00a0\u00a0 The current fuel price shows a 60% discount from the report he is\u00a0referring his readers to.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">In addition as I have noted many times, Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE) needs to be taken with some caution &#8211; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/allenergyconsulting.com\/blog\/2012\/06\/05\/levelized-cost-of-electricity-lcoe-analysis-potentially-misguides-you-in-the-power-markets\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">https:\/\/allenergyconsulting.com\/blog\/2012\/06\/05\/levelized-cost-of-electricity-lcoe-analysis-potentially-misguides-you-in-the-power-markets\/<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0 LCOE gives the person who is doing the calculation many opportunities to introduce bias \u2013 from assumed operational performance without incorporating reality.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">I understand people will post things likely to their bias, but I do not think we should legitimize articles which lack any analytical rigor.\u00a0\u00a0 I really did not have to dig far to see the article lacked substance.\u00a0\u00a0 If Mr. Farrell just focused on the falling solar prices \u2013 which is a real, credible and worthy of noting \u2013 then, the article could have had some credibility.\u00a0 However, he introduces a comparison which is outdated, only to support an attention getting theme, which holds no credibility, but in fact, misinforms the reader.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">Please do consider All Energy Consulting for your energy consulting needs \u2013 Market Analysis \u2013 Technology Review \u2013 Modeling \u2013 etc\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">Your Unbiased Energy Consultant,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"mailto:dkb@allenergyconsulting.com\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">David K.
