{"id":348,"date":"2012-04-11T14:42:18","date_gmt":"2012-04-11T19:42:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/allenergyconsulting.com\/blog\/?p=348"},"modified":"2012-04-11T15:32:47","modified_gmt":"2012-04-11T20:32:47","slug":"the-demise-of-coal-overstated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/allenergyconsulting.com\/blog\/2012\/04\/11\/the-demise-of-coal-overstated\/","title":{"rendered":"The Demise of Coal Overstated"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">As I noted in my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/allenergyconsulting.com\/blog\/2012\/04\/09\/volatility-in-the-power-markets-inevitable\/\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; color: #0000ff; font-size: small;\">previous blog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">, I spoke at a power symposium last week.\u00a0 Many of the speakers had concluded coal is dead.\u00a0\u00a0 The rhetoric is the same on the internet and major publications.\u00a0\u00a0 People have even spoken to the point to say coal is more expensive than gas.\u00a0\u00a0 This is sadly far from the truth.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">Weather played a key role in the current price predicament for natural gas.\u00a0\u00a0 One year should never be extrapolated when weather played such a crucial role \u2013 case in point look at the price action in natural gas prices after Hurricane Katrina. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/allenergyconsulting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/henryhubmonthly.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-349\" title=\"Henry Hub Monthly Prices\" src=\"https:\/\/allenergyconsulting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/henryhubmonthly.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"481\" height=\"289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/allenergyconsulting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/henryhubmonthly.jpg 481w, https:\/\/allenergyconsulting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/henryhubmonthly-300x180.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 481px) 100vw, 481px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">It is a true statement for those trading \u2013 \u201cMarkets can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 You can see it almost took 6 months for Katrina\u2019s price impact to fade.\u00a0 One could look at the current situation as the inverse situation &#8211; instead of a hurricane reducing supply you have a mild winter reducing demand.\u00a0 It takes time for fundamentals to rebalance the market.\u00a0\u00a0 The price rebalancing can take even longer as noted in the irrational markets discussion.\u00a0 The irrational price levels of today\u2019s market are natural gas prices below coal market contracts.\u00a0 Ultimately those contracts will roll off and the negotiations for the coal contracts will come down or no longer cease to exist.\u00a0 Conservatively, I would estimate we are in the fourth month of un-fundamentally low prices.\u00a0\u00a0 I can foresee continued pressure downward on natural gas prices, but not past this year as long as we revert to normal weather.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">For those saying it is over for coal, they are forgetting their game theory rules.\u00a0 For every action there will be a reaction from those most impacted.\u00a0\u00a0 Coal consumption could potentially drop over 20% this year relative to last year\u2019s consumption.\u00a0 Inversely gas consumption in the power sector could see a rise of over 60% from last year\u2019s consumption.\u00a0\u00a0 These two actions do not come without consequences\/reactions.\u00a0\u00a0 As I indicated above, I expect coal prices to come down.\u00a0\u00a0 Inversely, I expect gas prices to rise.\u00a0 It is not if, it is just a matter of when.\u00a0 This combination will allow coal to once again prosper.\u00a0 Coal consumption will not regain its majority spot for generation (&gt;50%) given the environmental policies and the corresponding retirements, but I expect coal will continue to be the top 3 source type of generation for the US for many years to come.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Please do consider All Energy Consulting to help you understand where the markets will be and how best to align your organization to capture the change. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">We positively and evocatively challenge the current thinking involving any aspect of energy use.
