{"id":298,"date":"2012-03-01T22:07:18","date_gmt":"2012-03-02T04:07:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/allenergyconsulting.com\/blog\/?p=298"},"modified":"2012-03-04T18:58:28","modified_gmt":"2012-03-05T00:58:28","slug":"gasoline-prices-will-impact-the-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/allenergyconsulting.com\/blog\/2012\/03\/01\/gasoline-prices-will-impact-the-economy\/","title":{"rendered":"Gasoline Prices Will Impact the Economy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">As promised from my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/allenergyconsulting.com\/blog\/2012\/02\/28\/regulation-does-not-equal-zero-risk\/\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; color: #0000ff; font-size: small;\">last blog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">, I have a rebuttal for <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/community.nasdaq.com\/News\/2012-02\/soaring-gasoline-prices-six-things-you-need-to-know.aspx?storyid=123107\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; color: #0000ff; font-size: small;\">Barclays Capital economists Peter Newland premise<\/span><\/a>,<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"> that the key concern is the rise, not the absolute price of gasoline.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">&#8220;The effect on growth of a rise in energy prices depends importantly on the abruptness of the increase. We found that, given a gradual and temporary rise, consumers are able to adjust saving patterns to smooth consumption, minimizing the impact,&#8221;; Peter Newland, an economist at Barclays, said in a recent note.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I do believe consumers will change, but I am not sure whether one would consider these price gyrations not abrupt.\u00a0\u00a0 To support my claim all one needs to do is to look at the historical retail price changes.\u00a0 \u00a0The price rise in 2011 was much greater than 2008 price, largely since 2008 had the back end price drop.\u00a0 In terms of all the other years this price change is the greatest price rise since 1980 on a year to year basis.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_299\" style=\"width: 395px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/allenergyconsulting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/image001.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-299\" class=\" wp-image-299\" title=\"Retail Gasoline Changes\" src=\"https:\/\/allenergyconsulting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/image001-300x180.png\" alt=\"Retail Gasoline Changes\" width=\"385\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-299\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Retail Gasoline Changes<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">In terms of consumer behavior change, I believe the extent of consumer change is limited compared to what Peter may believe.\u00a0 The following graph shows that consumers do react in two areas &#8211; being more efficient and driving less.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<dl id=\"attachment_300\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 393px; height: 262px;\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><a href=\"https:\/\/allenergyconsulting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/image002.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-300\" title=\"Consumer Changes due to Gasoline\" src=\"https:\/\/allenergyconsulting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/image002-300x195.png\" alt=\"Consumer Changes due to Gasoline\" width=\"383\" height=\"244\" \/><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd\">Consumer Changes due to Gasoline<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">As the cost of gasoline to the consumer increases more rapidly than their disposable income growth in the range of 3% or higher, we see an eventual reaction from the consumer.\u00a0 Howeve, the change in the consumer behavior is very narrow other than in the late 70\u2019s and early 80\u2019s.\u00a0 The largest miles traveled drop was only -1.8% in 2008.\u00a0 Also, I expect the fleet mile per gallon to change more slowly, given the fleet is so large now with over 250 million registered vehicles compared to 1980 of only 161 million.\u00a0 MPG change is a function of the fleet calculation by EPA.\u00a0\u00a0 I do have the explicit miles traveled divided by the gasoline consumed.\u00a0 The last time that improved by over 2% was back in 1992.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">There is no doubt the gasoline prices is dragging the economy.\u00a0\u00a0 As I have pointed out in many of my blogs, energy is\u00a0a means to an end.\u00a0\u00a0 Gasoline is no different.\u00a0\u00a0 Having all the gasoline without the ability to use it to be productive will do nothing to an economy.\u00a0 Whether one is driving to work or getting goods delivered, the increase in cost will result in a reduction of the economy.\u00a0 There are critical price\/expense points.\u00a0 I believe we are likely to cross that point this year. The below graph shows the historical trends of gasoline expense related to the economy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_301\" style=\"width: 432px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/allenergyconsulting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/image003.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-301\" class=\" wp-image-301\" title=\"Gasoline &amp; Economy\" src=\"https:\/\/allenergyconsulting.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/image003-300x216.png\" alt=\"Gasoline &amp; Economy\" width=\"422\" height=\"245\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-301\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gasoline &amp; Economy<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">As the graph shows, as soon as the economy starts spending over 3% on gasoline we see a slowdown in the economy.\u00a0\u00a0 For 2012 I would expect another year above 3%.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">I have spent much of my career analyzing the gasoline markets, given its importance to the US petroleum balance.\u00a0 I have many more graphs and views into the gasoline markets.\u00a0\u00a0 For 2012, I expect gasoline demand to see the same fate as was observed in 2011.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">We positively and evocatively challenge the current thinking involving any aspect of energy use.
