{"id":129,"date":"2012-01-16T09:04:32","date_gmt":"2012-01-16T15:04:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/allenergyconsulting.com\/blog\/?p=129"},"modified":"2012-01-24T07:34:53","modified_gmt":"2012-01-24T13:34:53","slug":"environmental-goals-to-save-lives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/allenergyconsulting.com\/blog\/2012\/01\/16\/environmental-goals-to-save-lives\/","title":{"rendered":"Environmental Goals: Is it to Save Lives?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">As I discussed in my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/allenergyconsulting.com\/blog\/2011\/12\/27\/the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly-of-the-recent-epa-mercury-air-toxics-standards-mats\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">previous blog on the issue with the EPA analysis on MATS \/ MACT<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> , EPA\u2019s intent is good, but is it worth it given all the other issues. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The logic not only applies to EPA regulations but everything we want to do as a society.\u00a0 I always made this argument with my friends and colleagues who are so passionate about global warming.\u00a0\u00a0 The resources and capital must be spent from somewhere. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The other important point to discuss is the objective.\u00a0\u00a0 What are the objectives?\u00a0 Many of these passionate arguments conclude the objective is to save lives.\u00a0\u00a0 I always espoused if saving lives is your objective there are numerous issues with finite cost that can save lives now (e.g. clean water technology, vaccines, education, etc\u2026).\u00a0\u00a0 I now have a perfect frame of reference to support my thesis.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/frugaldad.com\/microsoft\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;\">Bill Gates philanthropic adventures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> show he has saved lives at cost of less than $5K per person.\u00a0 Remember EPA analysis required $3-7 million dollars per life.\u00a0\u00a0 Think about some of the cost figures to mitigate carbon.\u00a0 On a per life basis these numbers get very high and the returns are not likely seen till many years later.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">A rationale argument, perhaps not too morally preferred, would be those lives are not likely related to you.\u00a0\u00a0 The low cost lifesaving methods are largely focused in the developing world region.\u00a0 However at the same time the rationale used to promote many of the global climate concerns are from studies documenting the greatest harms will be in third world areas. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">I don\u2019t have the answers, but I do know we have avoided talking about the objectives and the cost and the alternative use of capital and resources.\u00a0\u00a0 Unfortunately, I agree that an optimal decision in energy and\/or environment will likely result in subpar results as the money will likely\u00a0be\u00a0spent frivolously in other areas.\u00a0 However at some point, we can\u2019t all spend money frivolously\/non-optimal.\u00a0 We are seeing the result of this across the world as debt spending was an easy way to support frivolous\/non-optimal spending.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I\u00a0have developed many thought provoking\u00a0concepts in various policy discussion.\u00a0 Please do keep All Energy Consulting in mind for your consulting needs.
